Future, here we come!
It is reassuring to know that the town’s resolution for the new year is to examine what lies ahead for us and what measures we can take today to meet the changing demands of the next 25 years.
To that end, the town has updated the comprehensive 10-year plan and the mayor has appointed a task force to formulate a vision and road map to address the question of how we can improve the quality of life for all citizens, how we can make the visitors’ experience more rewarding and how we can secure the economic viability of our community.
The task force is comprised of a good cross section of community leaders; this should ensure a balanced and thoughtful outcome that will be delivered six months from now. No process is perfect, but the willingness to ask the question is a good start. The idea of taking a group of volunteers that have the ability to think independently is an efficient way to go about this, and the town’s willingness to partner with private citizens needs to be applauded.
I can’t speak for the group, but for my part I can assure you that I will not take this task lightly and that I will do my best to look beyond the obvious or the shortsighted. There are many elements that need to be considered and condensing it down to a set of practical strategies is not as easy as it might look. On the other hand, it is a great opportunity for all of us to have a voice in what our community might look and feel like in the future.
